Unleash Your Inner Blacksmith at The Folk School’s Blacksmithing Program
If you’ve ever been captivated by the transformative power of fire and metal, the Folk School’s Blacksmithing program is your ultimate playground. Recognized as one of the best in the country, this program offers both weeklong and weekend classes catering to all skill levels.
Located in a modern workspace named the Clay Spencer Blacksmith Shop, the facility is a craftsman’s dream come true. Opened in 2009, the shop stands as a centerpiece of the Folk School campus.
The shop is a spacious, well-equipped haven for aspiring blacksmiths. It features 12 student forges and a large instructor demonstrator forge. But that’s not all; the shop is stocked with an extensive range of hand tools, power hammers, saws, shears, grinders, drills, and welders.
This ensures a comprehensive learning experience for every student. For those moments when you need a break, the second-floor loft includes an air-conditioned classroom and a resource library. The Francis Whitaker Blacksmith Shop, the program’s old studio, now serves as an additional tool and finishing room for students.
The Folk School’s Blacksmithing program is not just about learning; it’s about becoming part of a community. The program regularly updates its offerings, and online registration for classes from January to June 2024 is already open. They even offer discounted tuition for locals, teachers, and young adults, making it accessible for a broader audience.
The program is deeply rooted in tradition while being forward-thinking. It has a history of community involvement, including special classes for women’s shelters and a strong focus on volunteerism. The program is also keen on innovation, as evidenced by its new online registration system.
In summary, the Folk School’s Blacksmithing program offers an unparalleled, hands-on experience in the art of blacksmithing. With top-notch facilities and a community-centric approach, it’s the perfect place to forge not just metal, but also lifelong skills and friendships.
