He is the founder and creative force behind Southern Forge, a renowned establishment specializing in crafting high-quality, meticulously designed knives. The Southern Forge logo represents all creations built in the shop, with Hults Knives being exclusively made by Josh himself.
Early Life and Background
Growing up on a small farm in South Mississippi, Josh developed a passion for making things from a young age. His childhood was marked by exploration and creation, building everything from flint knives to tree houses. He learned numerous skills from his father, including how to shoe horses, which eventually blossomed into a full-time career, allowing him to work with esteemed trainers and travel extensively.
Family and Career Shift
Josh married Kristin in 2002, and together they have three children: Sarah, Ava, and Mace. As his family and business grew, Josh decided to make a change to spend more time with his loved ones and serve his community. In 2012, he joined the Mobile Fire Rescue Department, maintaining his semi-local horseshoeing clientele due to his flexible work schedule. This change also allowed him more time to pursue his passion for knife making, turning it into a family operation.
Journey into Bladesmithing
Josh’s journey into bladesmithing began in 2008 when he built his first real knife from a truck coil spring. This experience ignited a fervent passion for knife making, leading him to delve deep into the art and strive to create the best knives possible. He values the supportive and knowledgeable knife community and is an active member of the American Bladesmith Society. Josh’s commitment to excellence and continuous learning has been a driving force in his journey as a bladesmith.
