why and how do I buy a custom knife.

First lets discuss the why:

You can always run down to your local sporting goods shop and purchase a wide variety of decent production knives.  But thats just it, they are the same knife that 4 other guys in your camp could have.  A custom knife is just that, a custom knife for you!

A knife is always a compromise, a great skinning knife is not a great camp knife. A great fillet knife sucks at skinning. And so on.  Unless you walk around with 16 blades, you will be stuck with these compromises. When you create a custom knife, you decide on the purpose.  Which purpose is most important and how you can minimize the compromises that mean the most to you.

Appearance.  This may be a biased opinion, but a custom blade will always that wow factor over a factory blade.  I like to think of my work as useful artwork.  I intend the blade to be functional, but also take great pride in the looks of appreciation when it is used.   I like well made things.

Fit and Function.  Hands are very different, and personally I prefer a meatier handle that fits my larger hands.  My wife needs a smaller blade and handle.  One of the question I will ask is for the users “hand size” and make the blade to fit.  As for function, one the really customizable things that will make the difference in your blade is the sheath(s).  How will you carry this knife.  Traditional, scout, sling, cross draw.  All have advantages.  A number of clients will order two different sheaths to suit different purposes.  Think about how you want to carry, and draw your knife.  What material suits.  Leather, wood, Kydex?  Do you need anything else on your sheath?  Fire stick, stone, matches..  All of this is possible with a custom blade.

Heirloom.  It is possible to etch a message or dedication to a custom blade so that it can become a family heirloom.  The family crest or symbol of your religion or beliefs can be added to the handle or decorative pin.

Typical costs for a custom build average approximately $100/inch of blade.
